    Mardi Gras is on Feb 16 in the Roman Catholic calendar. Lent begins on Feb 17. The Ethiopic calendar is probably offset from the Roman Catholic calendar by some amount.

    Though that wouldn’t explain why your colleagues are forsaking milk and meat for the next 2 months.

    They’re fasting for Orthodox Easter. They don’t eat dairy or meat but fish is okay. It’s for 60 days and they break on Easter Sunday. Most people fast for Easter even people who aren’t very religious. Easter is a huge holiday there, even bigger than Christmas.
